Thaba e Kholo Day One preview

Day one set's out from the lush lawns of the Clarens Golf and trout estate. This will be the home for the event across the entire weekend.

This route features trails towards the Lesotho side of Clarens and actually meanders you right up to the Lesotho border at 2150m above sea level. There is a fair split of single trail and district road along this route that meanders through two conservancies and private farms.

At the absolute peak of the trail, you will be able to see all the way from Golden Gate to Clarens and beyond back up to Bethlehem.

There are 2 notable climbs that you should prepare for, "Beast of the East" & "Bubbles". With them come great rewards in the form of flowing single trail and great descents. What might amaze you more in those climbs is that the Boers managed to haul armaments up those climbs without the use of an e-bike.

Features of this route include bushman paintings, Anglo Boer War hide aways, the last cannibal outpost of Southern Africa, Klein Caledon crossing and the Lesotho border viewpoint.

Riders taking to the Thaba e Kholo are advised to do a warmup ride the day before or in the very least within 3 days prior to the event as the altitude and thin air is tough to deal with at first.

- Awesome race merch. including early bird special to 1st 400 entrants

Thaba e kholo day two preview

It is fast, it is furious and the finish of 16km of downhill single trail is simply awesome! In complete contrast to day one and perhaps a reward for all the effort you put in, this route pushes the limits of how fast you and your noble steed can go. Heading out of Clarens and back towards Bethlehem, riders will find themselves on gentle but fast rolling district roads, one stinker of a climb in the form of "No O2" and ultimately the drop back down into the village from above in "The Sky Run".

Main features of day two include "The Ash River Express", "Andy's Cafe", "No O2" and the "The Sky Run". Simply put, this is the Freestate just showing off. You will be spoilt to 2 private reserves / conservancies on this day so lookout for Wildebeest and Eland.

The "Ash River Express" is possibly one of the most understated features of this route. This 8km section sends you parallel to the fast flowing Ash River which snakes through the land back and forth from hydro station to hydro station.

To put this in perspective, the average speed of the race leaders jumps up to around 35km/ph on this day from 20km/ph on day one.

At 16km before the finish line, you will be able to look down on the village of Clarens from above and all the way beyond to Gold Gate. Then the fun and games of "The Sky Run Begin"

Thaba e Nyenyane Day One preview

Welcome to the lighter side of life, we invite you to take the high road on day one with Thaba e Nyenyane.

This route takes to many of the same trails as it's bigger brother, the Thaba e Kholo. However, there are significant differences in terms of difficulty, technicality and distance. You will still take on all the fun stuff and see the same panoramic views across the eastern Freestate, it will just be a little shorter.

There is still work to be done out there, nothing is for free on a trail. The mountains were there long before us and you just need to get over them.

Main features of day one include "Keegans", "River Run", "Mushroom Rock", "Beast of the East" and "Sids".
Riders taking to this ever are advised to do a warmup ride the day before or in the very least within 3 days prior to the event as the altitude and thin air is tough to deal with at first.

Included in your race entry: -

Thaba e Nyenyane day two preview

Okay tough stuff, so you made it through day one. That is a great achievement. Now it is time to come out and play, in complete contrast to day one, day two is made up of around 80% district road. Fast rolling district road to be exact.

The route heads out back towards Bethlehem for 48km of beautiful farm roads. These snake you along the Ash River, onto other private farms and reserves and finally back into the Clarens Golf and Trout estate.

Main features of this route include "The Ash River Express", "Andes Cafe" and "Titanic Drop". It really is a great way to finish off an adventurous weekend in the Freestate with us. Let's just hope that you did not cash in too many chips the day before...

Andes Cafe water point leads you into a private game lodge. Here you will find yourself literally surrounded by Wildebeest, Springbok, Eland and more. We do ask you to not spook the animals on your way through.
